Remember: You don’t lead Things, You lead People!

txcertspkcropAfter my personal experience volunteering in Joplin recently and realizing the enormity of the situation and the organization it takes to coordinate the total effort during an emergency response, I had a new perspective for speaking at the 2011 Texas Unites Conference in Austin, Texas. During my time there, I met people both volunteer and paid staff leaders.  There is no doubt that these individuals are passionate to help others prepare for any type of emergency, but the challenge is for citizens to head to the education being provided.

Our time together was spent talking about effective communication to support their efforts in leadership.  The reality of there work is comprised of individuals and teams coming together.  But also, most of their effort is communicating preparation and not always first response to disasters, so effective communication is priority one.  Our time together went by too quickly.

While at the conference, I picked up one interesting nugget I hadn’t thought of before.  During a tornado warning, you want to be in a window free centered room and if possible, you shelterwant to hold on to something that is anchored to the floor.  There are not many items that fit this description for being anchored, but a toilet is.  It is anchored to bolts in the concrete on your lowest level.  What else could you hold on to that is anchored in concrete in your home?

After the Joplin tornado May 22nd, the weather patterns were still causing havoc in the Midwest.  I have provided a picture of my daughter, Ragan, and me camped out in the bathroom with our safety headgear on.  My three children had the strapped on helmets.  All that was left for me was the Pig Sooie foam hat.

Have a plan for your family and be prepared for an emergency situation.


What else do You do?

Every now and then I am asked, “What else do you do?” I am a firm believer that you have to do more than just be a speaker/presenter so that you have stories to tell and life experiences to share.  While many speakers run their own companies, it is still critical to be actively involved in a business/organization to keep you on your toes about the challenges facing people within those types of environments.  If you are a lone wolf, it is hard to see reality even if you are an active reader and expect that to be your experience.

Outside of presenting on various topics, I also lead an organization called Schools And Families Engaged (S.A.F.E TEAM on Campus).  The  mission is to support family engagement and a safe-learning environment in every school so all students can achieve academic success.  In 1998, I simply volunteered at my son’s elementary school for one day and realized the value and need of my role and the role of other fathers and families in students’ lives.  While a school shooting tragedy started me volunteering on campus, my passion to improve school safety has  put me on a path I never expected to walk.

As of  last week, I was published in Campus Safety magazine with an article titled, “Adopting Appropriate Policies for Screening Volunteers”.  The sad part is, we live in a different world than when I grew up and because of this, we must proceed with caution.  The one-liner I always share in regard to visitors and volunteers on school campuses is, “no one gets near our children unless we know who and why they are there.”   I don’t say this to scare anyone, but to impress upon them to be vigilant in regards to school safety.

It was time to CELEBRATE my Mom!!

My mother, Marlene Rowe, will be retiring from her role in education as a principal and former teacher this June 2011. She has served as an educator for 39 years.  This past week, my family and I along with many extended family members, former teachers, students and friends joined together for a catholic mass in her honor and then several presentations were given.  My brother, Todd, and I were asked to share a few words about our mom.  The following are my words as I remember them that I shared from the podium.  It was an honor to stand before my mom and talk directly to her as her son and share just a few of the ways she has impacted my life.

100_6197“This past week, I registered my first child for college.  As my son and I were attending the orientation session, one of the admissions directors said, “the reason to finish your college degree is that education can go with you wherever you go.  Nobody can take it from you.  Once a graduate, always a graduate.”  Immediately that hit me because it was true that no one can take anything from your mind.

As I thought about my mom and what I would share today, what were some of the things she instilled in my mind and heart that can’t be taken away.  Three things came to the forefront: Faith, Family, and Education.

First there is Faith.  The foundation of my faith comes from my mother and her example.  All of her life, my mother has walked consistently as a Christian woman.

Next is Family.  As individuals, we live our own lives and start as a son/daughter then a husband/wife and end as a father/mother.  But as a son or daughter, we actually watch our parent’s lives in reverse.  My mom has been there to love and encourage me and I seem to experience this more and more even in to my 40’s.  If you are in the 8th grade, please raise your hand.  Listen to me when I say, your mother is much wiser than you think she is right now and you will appreciate her in a few short years.

As a wife, I saw commitment from my mom.  She showed me that she values marriage.  Marriage isn’t easy but it is worth it.

As of these last several years, I have observed her as a daughter.  Many of you know that we lost my grandmother Margaret Manley a few years ago.  During that time and still today, with my granddad Bud Manley at 95 years old, I have seen my mom love and care for her parents.  Some of you students have made cards during holidays to send to the residents of the Forum Home close to the school.  While her job at school ends every day, she then goes every day to see granddad and to care for him.

While I didn’t personally value Education and the opportunity it offered in my early years., I did enjoy my social time at school vs. striving for the grades.  But when I think about my mom’s 39 years as an educator, dedication is a word that sums it up.  Through her dedication as a teacher and administrator my mom has provided the opportunity of life change for her students through education.

This day is a celebration for you mom.  Congratulations for all you have accomplished!  I love you.”

Effective Leaders Communicate Effectively

Arkansas PTA had Scott keynote for their convention in April. For many volunteer-based organizations, they like to offer professional trainers to support their leaders.  The goal is to increase their skill levels to be more effective communicators.

Sometimes you need to Giveaway your Talents to Encourage Others

Scott had the privilege of attending his first Toastmasters chapter meeting this week in Conway, AR. While he has presented at a Toastmasters Regional conference a couple years ago, he hadn’t attended a local chapter meeting.  Hewlett-Packard (HP) has an office with over 1,200 employees in Conway.  Scott was invited to present for the current HP chapter that resides on their campus.  If you haven’t attended or been a part of Toastmasters, it may be right for you.  “Toastmasters is a learn-by-doing workshop in which participants hone their speaking and leadership skills in a friendly atmosphere.”

Follow this one for a second, Scott’s friend’s son works for HP and is the current President of the chapter.  He asked Scott if he wouldn’t mind stopping by to attend the meeting and then conduct a short presentation for the group.  Scott said after the program, “It seemed to be the perfect storm for me after hearing the first two speeches delivered that day on Social Selling/Calling and Fear Management.  It all has to do with communication and people skills.  After the 2nd speech I presented for less than 10 minutes on the DISC personality profile and was able to tie in the success points of different personalities.  We were able to incorporate many points brought in by the previous speeches since they were talking about the specific skills needed within roles filled by people. ”

As always, Scott’s gifts are energy and passion when he communicates with a group.  “It was encouraging to see brand new employees sitting alongside veterans being challenged to standup and speak on a prepared or spontaneous topic.  As someone in the industry that has the opportunity to be considered a professional in the ‘speaking business’, there is always a time and place to inspire others to know they can do it too.  I appreciated the opportunity to be a small part of their meeting.”


This side note is for the assigned Grammarian at the meeting.  The role of the Grammarian is to share the Word of the Day and to count the  (so, um, ah, alright, like, etc.) during a speech.  At the end of the meeting, the Grammarian reports on all the (so, um, ah, etc.) per person that spoke.  Scott stated, “It was a true accountability moment to learn as a presenter.”  They didn’t track Scott’s officially, but he will self-proclaim one ‘so’.   Additionally Scott wanted to share, “While I went in to the meeting with a perception of a laid back atmosphere and just a good time getting together with others, I soon learned of the gravitas for how the meeting is conducted.”

Is it Business or Politics when talking about Taxes (

I love the USA and can’t imagine being a citizen of any other country because of the potential of the person you can become in our nation. Are you ready for it…. buuuuuut… no nation is perfect and should always be focused on how to do things better.  Because my IQ may not be at the level of the top intellectual (I used spell check to get that spelled right. LOL) thinkers, I count on them to provide concepts and ideas that I could never imagine.  The most recent one is in regards to the USA tax system.  Because the average American has no chance of understanding the current 71,684 pages of tax code, there has to be a better way to more efficiently fund the needs of our nation and allow the citizens to gain a better hold and understanding of their hard earned income.  Welcom to the Fair Tax!  Go to the website and read a little info below:

The FairTax Act (HR 25, S 13) is nonpartisan legislation. It abolishes all federal personal and corporate income taxes, gift, estate, capital gains, alternative minimum, Social Security, Medicare, and self-employment taxes and replaces them with one simple, visible, federal retail sales tax  administered primarily by existing state sales tax authorities.

The FairTax taxes us only on what we choose to spend on new goods or services, not on what we earn. The FairTax is a fair, efficient, transparent, and intelligent solution to the frustration and inequity of our current tax system.

The FairTax:

  • Enables workers to keep their entire paychecks
  • Enables retirees to keep their entire pensions
  • Refunds in advance the tax on purchases of basic necessities
  • Allows American products to compete fairly
  • Brings transparency and accountability to tax policy
  • Ensures Social Security and Medicare funding
  • Closes all loopholes and brings fairness to taxation
  • Abolishes the IRS

The last bullet may be exciting for some and very uneasy for others.  As a business owner, what I see is an opportunity to improve a part of a large company, our government, to improve efficiency and increase the revenues by collecting from all.   When I say all, I mean those who may be visitors or legal or illegal citizens and those who may be in professions that while they do have income, legal or illegal, we see little if none of it being accounted for through our current tax system structure.

Make time to understand the Fair Tax and see what a positive difference it can make for ALL our citizens.


New Content Focused on Preparing Students for College and Career.

A week ago, Scott, and soon to be 20 of his best friends, met up in Cincinnati, OH for a weekend of training and certification with’s Making It Count organization. It was intense and fun to be with so many professional speakers.  As of Friday, Scott received the official word that he is certified to “Edutain” both of the high school programs: Making Your College Search Count (focused on Juniors in high school) and Making your College and Career Count (focused on Seniors in high school).  The 40 min. presentations are content rich and very effective for the students.  Guidance Counselors and Administration will see the immediate impact from the content.  Go to Making It Count to read the story about the founder.
